What Flushes is
A social network with one status update: you’re in the bathroom. Pick an emoji, finish the sentence that starts “is…”, and hold the flush button. You get 59 characters, counting the “is”. Your line lands in the feed beside everyone else who is in there right now.
Signing in uses your Bluesky account, which turns out not to be a Bluesky account. Your handle, your followers and your posts live in an account on the AT Protocol, the open network Bluesky is built on. Bluesky is one app reading that account. Flushes is another. That whole set of apps is called the Atmosphere.
None of it leaves you with a Flushes account. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to close, and a flush lands in the account you already had before you got here.
How Flushes started
It was built in a weekend, as a bit. The bit kept going, and the people who kept it going call themselves flushers. Creating a Decentralized Bathroom, on @dame.is’s blog, is the write-up of why.
Why we’re raising money
Flushes is a silly app about going to the bathroom. Bathroom bills are not silly. They make a normal daily thing dangerous for trans people.
Flushes is raising money for The Trevor Project, a suicide prevention and crisis intervention nonprofit for LGBTQ+ young people. Read more.

Where your flushes live
A flush is a record of type im.flushing.right.now, a custom lexicon on the AT Protocol. Posting one writes three fields:
- A line of text (always starting with “is…”)
- A bathroom-related emoji
- A timestamp
The record is written to your own Atmosphere account, the same place your Bluesky posts sit, and not to a database here. Flushes reads it; you own it. Delete one whenever you like with a record browser like Aturi, and it stops appearing here too.
Who makes it
Dame created the first version to find out what a custom record type on the AT Protocol could do. atpotato runs it now, and it has grown reactions, replies, profiles and a fundraiser since.
Bugs and ideas
The feedback board takes both. A suggestion there is a record in your own repository, other people can vote it up, and the answer it gets back is a record too: planned, being built, shipped, not doing this.
The board runs on userinput.app’s lexicon rather than one of ours, so anything filed on either site appears on both with the same votes and replies. If you would rather not use it, reply or DM to @flushes.app on Bluesky.
